Dating After 50 for Men: What Actually Works in 2026
A practical guide for men dating after 50: what to put in your profile, the photos that work, where to meet women, how fast to move, and how to be honest about health, family and travel.
Quick verdict: dating after 50 works for men who keep it simple. Use one or two sites, lead with a recent photo of your face, write a profile with specifics instead of adjectives, send short first messages that ask her something, and suggest meeting within a week or two. Be honest early about kids, health and how much you can travel. The men who struggle are usually the ones who look in too small a pool.
Arranged figures here come from our own member data, which we publish in full. We run the app, so read our section on it with that in mind.
Dating after 50 as a man is mostly about doing a few ordinary things well: a clear profile, honest photos, short messages and a quick move to meeting in person. Most of what goes wrong comes from looking in too narrow a place or waiting too long to say what you want.
Is dating after 50 harder for men?
It's harder in one specific way: fewer people your age are on the apps. In a July 2023 analysis of its 2022 survey, Pew Research Center found that 17% of Americans aged 50 and older had ever used a dating site or app, rising to 23% for people in their 50s. Only 3% of adults 50 and up were using one or had in the past year, compared with 15% of adults under 50.
So the room is smaller. That doesn't mean your odds are worse once you're in it. It means the habits that work at 30, like swiping in your own zip code and waiting for someone to turn up, work less well. The fix is to choose your sites deliberately and look a little wider than you think you need to.
Decide what you're looking for before you sign up
A second marriage? A steady partner who keeps her own house? Something lighter while you figure out what's next? A relationship with a wider age gap where both of you are clear about what you want? All of these are fine. They just point to different places.
Write your answer down in one sentence. It'll go in your profile later, and it'll stop you spending three months on a site built for something you don't want. If you're in your 40s or straddling the line, our guide to dating over 40 for men is the hub for everything else we've written on this.
What to put in your dating profile after 50
The best profiles for men over 50 do two jobs. They show what you look like now, and they give her something easy to reply to. Most men nail neither, because they write a résumé.
Skip "successful, fit, love to travel, enjoy fine dining." Every second profile says it, so it says nothing. Try three plain sentences about your actual life instead:
- What your week looks like ("I still run the business, but Fridays are mine now")
- One thing you're into that she could ask about ("I've been restoring the same boat for four years and it's nearly seaworthy")
- What you're looking for, in your own words
Then the basics, stated plainly: your real age, whether you have kids and how old they are, where you live and whether you travel. Shaving five years off your age is the most common profile lie, and it's the one that sours a first date in the first minute. If she wouldn't date a 58-year-old, you don't want that date anyway.
Photos for men over 50
Photos do more work than everything else on the profile put together. On Arranged, women's profiles with no photos averaged 2.3 likes over 90 days, against 12.1 for profiles with one photo and around 14 for profiles with two or more. That's women's profiles, not men's, but there's no reason to think a blank profile helps a man either. You can read the full numbers in our 2026 data report.
Your first photo should be your face, recent, in daylight, looking at the camera. Then one full-length shot. Then one or two of you doing something you actually do. Leave out the sunglasses, the fish, the group shot from your nephew's wedding, and anything from before your hair made its decision. If you want a shot-by-shot list, our profile photo guide for men over 40 applies just as well at 50 and 60.
Where men over 50 actually meet women
Online is now the default, but it isn't the only place, and the men who do well often use both.
For sites, we compared Match, OurTime, eharmony, SilverSingles, Hinge and Arranged in the best dating sites for men over 50, with every price and feature sourced and dated. In short: Match and OurTime suit men who want someone near their own age, eharmony suits men who'd rather be matched than browse, and Hinge rewards men who can write a decent sentence. Pick one broad site and one that fits how you want to date. Give each a full month.
Offline, the places that work are the ones where you'd go anyway and where conversation is normal: a cooking class, a running or cycling club, a wine tasting, volunteer work, a friend's dinner party.
First messages: short, specific, a question
This is where we have the clearest data. Across 1,804 first messages men sent on Arranged between August and October 2026, openers of 60 to 149 characters got a reply 41% of the time. Openers of 150 characters or more got one 18% of the time. Messages that asked a question were answered 50% of the time, against 33% for those that didn't.
So one or two sentences, about something on her profile, ending in a question. A long, polite paragraph about yourself feels respectful to write and reads like homework to answer. Our guide to writing a first message that gets a reply has worked examples, and the study of 1,800 first messages has the timing data.
Then be patient. The median reply on Arranged came about 7 hours after the first message. An afternoon of silence is not a verdict.
Pacing: how fast to move after 50
Faster than you think, on the move to meeting. Slower than you might want, on everything after that.
Weeks of messaging rarely make a first date better. They make it more loaded, because both of you have built a picture the real person has to live up to. After a few good exchanges, suggest a short phone or video call, then a specific plan: a day, a time, a place. Coffee or a drink, an hour or so, somewhere public. Our match-to-first-date guide lays out that week day by day.
After that, let it breathe. Men who've been out of dating for a long time sometimes go from first date to "let's take a trip together" in a fortnight, because they know what they want and don't see the point in waiting. That certainty is attractive. Pressure isn't. Let her set some of the pace.
Being honest about health and energy
Nobody needs your medical history on a second date. But if something shapes daily life, say a bad back that rules out hiking, a heart condition that means you've stopped drinking, or a sleep schedule built around a 5 a.m. start, mention it once things look promising. Said plainly and early, it's just information. Discovered later, it feels like something you hid.
Same with energy. If you'd rather have dinner at 7 than go out at 10, say so. Pretending to be a night owl for three dates helps nobody.
Adult kids, grandkids and family
At 50-plus, you probably come with a family attached. Grown children, maybe grandchildren, maybe an elderly parent, maybe an ex you still see at holidays. Put the outline in your profile ("two kids in their twenties, one grandson I'm wrapped around the finger of") and leave the details for conversation.
Introductions to family can wait until the relationship has some shape. Adult children often have opinions about a parent dating, especially after a divorce or a death, and those opinions are easier to manage once you're sure the relationship is worth it. Tell them before they find out from someone else, though. That part matters more than timing.
If you're coming out of a divorce, our guide to dating after divorce for men covers when you're actually ready and what to watch for in yourself.
Dating across cities after 50
This is the change most men over 50 aren't making, and it's the easiest one. If you have some flexibility, whether that's a lighter work schedule, air miles, or a second place, widen your search beyond your own city.
On Arranged, 86% of men's first messages crossed 250 miles or more, and distance didn't lower the odds of a reply: messages under 25 miles were answered 35% of the time, and those crossing 1,000 miles 37%. Members fly each other out, and nobody treats that as unusual. Our travel dating guide for men covers how to plan a first meeting in another city, who books what, and safety on both sides. If Florida is on your list, the Miami city page has neighborhoods and first-date spots.
Scams: the part that's not optional
Men over 50 are a target, and not because they're naive. They tend to have savings and a willingness to help. The FTC received 64,003 reports of romance scams in 2023, with reported losses of $1.14 billion and a median loss of $2,000 per person.
The pattern is consistent. Someone moves fast, can't video call, has a crisis, and needs money, gift cards or crypto. The rule is simple: never send money to anyone you haven't met in person, whatever the reason. Our online dating safety checklist has the full list of warning signs.
Where Arranged fits
Arranged suits men over 50 who are open to a wider age gap and to meeting someone in another city. Everyone on it is 18 or older. The median match age gap on Arranged is 19 years, and men's first messages got replies 36% to 41% of the time across most gap bands, with a dip to 26% at 20 to 24 years. Browsing full profiles, liking and matching are free for men. Messaging takes Premium at $49.99 a month; Diamond, at $99.99, adds privacy features such as private browsing plus a weekly 24-hour boost. Women join and message free. Photo verification is optional: a live selfie checked automatically for a face and apparent age. It isn't compared to profile photos, so treat it as one signal, not a guarantee.
Quick answer: how should a man date after 50?
Use one or two dating sites that fit what you want, lead with a recent photo of your face, write a profile with specifics, and send short first messages that ask a question (on Arranged, 41% of 60–149 character openers got a reply versus 18% of longer ones). Move to a call and a specific first date within a week or two, be honest early about kids and health, widen your search beyond your city, and never send money to someone you haven't met.
Frequently asked questions
Is it too late to start dating at 50 or 60?
No. Fewer people your age use dating apps (Pew found 23% of Americans in their 50s had ever used one, in a 2022 survey), but the ones who are there are usually serious. Choose your sites carefully and look beyond your own city.
What is the best dating site for men over 50?
It depends on what you want. Match and OurTime suit men looking for someone close to their age; eharmony suits men who prefer to be matched; Arranged suits men open to a wider age gap and meeting across cities. Our full comparison goes site by site.
Should I lie about my age on a dating profile?
No. It's the most common reason a first date goes flat in the first minute. State your real age and let the women who are interested in a man your age find you.
How long should I message before meeting?
A few good exchanges, then a short call, then a specific plan. A week or two from match to first date is a good target. Long message threads tend to make first dates more awkward, not less.
When should I tell a woman about my kids or health issues?
Mention kids in your profile. Mention anything health-related that shapes daily life once things look promising, usually by the second or third date. Said early and plainly, it's information. Found out later, it feels like a secret.
How do I avoid romance scams after 50?
Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you haven't met in person. Insist on a video call early. Be wary of anyone who moves fast and then has an emergency. The FTC logged $1.14 billion in reported romance scam losses in 2023.
Widen the search.
