After You Match: How to Get to a First Date in a Week
From match to first date within a week: when to move from chat to a call or video call, how to propose a specific plan, safety on both sides, meeting someone in another city, and what kills momentum.
Quick verdict: after you match, aim for a first date within about a week. Send a short first message, trade a few good messages over two or three days, suggest a 15-minute phone or video call, then propose one specific plan with a day, a time and a public place. If you live in different cities, the call matters even more, and the first meeting should be short, public and easy for either of you to leave.
Arranged figures come from our own member data, which we publish in full. We run the app.
After you match, the goal is a first date within about a week: a few messages, a short call, then a specific plan. The longer a match sits in chat, the more likely it is to fade, and most matches that go nowhere die of drift rather than rejection.
This guide walks through that week step by step, including the part most first-date advice skips: what to do when she lives in another city, which on Arranged is the normal case rather than the exception.
Why a week?
Because interest is highest right after a match and it doesn't keep. On Arranged, the median reply to a man's first message came about 7 hours later, so a back-and-forth of a few exchanges naturally takes two or three days. Add a call and a bit of planning, and a week is about right. Much faster can feel pushy. Much slower and the conversation starts running out of things to say before you've met.
A week is a target, not a rule. Work schedules, travel and kids all get a vote. What matters is that there's a plan on the table, even if the date itself is two weeks away.
Days 1 to 2: the first messages
Start short. One or two sentences about something specific on her profile, ending in a question. On Arranged, men's openers of 60 to 149 characters got a reply 41% of the time, against 18% for 150 characters or more, and openers with a question got replies 50% of the time against 33% without. Our guide to writing a first message that gets a reply has examples and the full numbers.
Once she replies, match her pace and length roughly. You're not trying to cover her life story. You're checking two things: that the conversation is easy, and that you'd both like to meet. Three or four good exchanges usually tell you.
Days 2 to 4: move from chat to a call or video call
Suggest a short call once the conversation has some warmth. Keep the ask light and specific: "I'm enjoying this. Want to do a quick 15-minute video call Thursday evening before we plan anything?" A time limit makes it easy to say yes.
A call does three useful jobs. It tells you whether you actually click when you're talking rather than typing. It confirms the person matches their photos. And it filters out a lot of scams, because people running romance scams typically avoid live video. The FTC's consumer advice on romance scams lists excuses not to meet or video chat as a warning sign.
If she'd rather do a voice call, or wait until the date, that's fine too. Some women prefer not to video call a stranger, and the point is comfort, not a test. If someone keeps dodging any kind of call for weeks, though, take that as information.
Moving to text or WhatsApp is optional. Many women prefer to keep chatting in the app until after the first date, which keeps their number private. Let her offer.
Days 3 to 5: propose a specific plan
"We should get a drink sometime" is not a plan. It's a hope. A specific proposal is easier to say yes to and shows you're serious:
- A day and a time, ideally two options ("Saturday afternoon or Tuesday after work")
- A named, public place you know ("the wine bar on 4th, the one with the patio")
- A rough length, so nobody feels trapped ("an hour or so")
Coffee, a drink, a walk with a stop somewhere, a gallery: all good. A long dinner on a first date is a big commitment for two people who've never met. Our guide on how to plan a first date covers what makes a good first-date venue and how to end the evening without awkwardness.
Then confirm the day before with a short, friendly message. It catches mix-ups and reminds both of you it's happening.
Safety before the first date
Safety applies on both sides, and the basics haven't changed:
- Meet in a public place the first time. Each of you gets there and back under your own steam.
- Tell a friend where you'll be and when you expect to check in.
- Don't share your home address, workplace details or financial information before you've met.
- Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you haven't met in person. The FTC received reports of $1.14 billion in romance scam losses in 2023.
On Arranged, photo verification is optional: a live selfie checked automatically for a face and apparent age. It isn't compared to the profile photos, so it tells you a real person made the profile, not that every photo is current. A video call fills that gap. Our first-date safety tips have the full list.
When you live in different cities
On most dating apps, someone hundreds of miles away is a match you ignore. On Arranged, most first messages go to someone in another city. In a recent five-day window, 93% of men's first messages went to someone 50 miles or more away, and across the full period from August to October 2026, 86% crossed 250 miles or more. Distance didn't hurt reply rates either: 35% under 25 miles, 40% at 250 to 999 miles, 37% at 1,000 or more. The full figures are in our 2026 data report.
The simplest way to start one: change the city in Discover's location filter, browse who's there, and message the people you'd like to meet. If you know you'll be in Las Vegas next month, browse Las Vegas now. The Las Vegas city page has neighborhoods and first-date spots.
The week-long timeline still works across cities, with a few changes:
- The call is not optional. Before anyone books travel, you should both have talked live at least once, ideally on video.
- Set the plan around a trip one of you is already making if you can. It takes the pressure off a first meeting.
- Keep the first meeting short and public, the same as a local date. A coffee on day one of a visit, not a whole weekend together.
- Each of you should have your own place to stay and your own way home. If you're hosting a visit, offer a separate hotel room as the default, and say so up front.
Our guide to flying someone out for a first trip covers who books what and how to make the invitation easy to accept or decline, and first date ideas when you travel has plans that work in a city one of you doesn't know.
What kills momentum after a match
Most matches don't end with a no. They end with nothing. These are the usual causes:
- Weeks of texting with no plan. The conversation peaks and then slowly runs dry. Our post on texting before the first date goes deeper on this.
- The vague ask. "We should meet sometime" leaves her to do the planning, and most people don't.
- Going quiet for days, then reappearing with "hey stranger." If you're busy, say so in a sentence.
- Rescheduling more than once. Things come up, but twice reads as low interest.
- Rushing past a first meeting. Suggesting a weekend away before you've had coffee puts pressure on her and usually gets a polite no.
- Heavy topics too early. Your divorce, your ex, your frustrations with dating apps: save them, or skip them.
If she says no, or not yet
Take "not yet" at face value and leave the door open: "No problem. Let me know when things calm down." Then let her come back to it. If it's a clear no, thank her and move on. The way you handle a no says more about you than any first message, and she may well have friends.

Quick answer: what should you do after you match?
Send a short first message that asks a question, trade a few messages over two or three days, suggest a 15-minute phone or video call, then propose a specific first date: a day, a time and a public place. Aim to have a plan within about a week. If you live in different cities, talk live before anyone books travel and keep the first meeting short, public and easy to leave.
Frequently asked questions
How long should you text before a first date?
Long enough to know the conversation is easy and you both want to meet, usually a few days. Aim to have a specific plan within about a week of matching.
Should you video call before a first date?
It's a good idea, especially if you live in different cities. A short video call confirms the person matches their photos, and the FTC lists avoiding video chat as a romance scam warning sign. If she prefers a voice call, that's fine too.
How do you ask someone on a first date from a dating app?
Be specific: give two day-and-time options, a named public place and a rough length. "Saturday afternoon or Tuesday after work, coffee at the place on 4th, an hour or so?" is easier to say yes to than "we should meet sometime."
What if my match lives in another city?
That's normal on Arranged, where 86% of men's first messages crossed 250 miles or more. Talk on a call first, try to plan around a trip one of you is already taking, and keep the first meeting short and public, with separate places to stay.
Why do matches go quiet?
Usually drift rather than rejection: too many messages without a plan, a vague ask, or long gaps between replies. Proposing a specific plan early is the best fix.
Is it too soon to ask for a date after a day of chatting?
Not if the conversation is going well. Suggesting a short call first can make the ask feel more natural, but a specific, low-key plan after a few good exchanges is rarely too soon.
