Dating as a Divorced Dad: Time, Kids and Honesty

A practical guide for divorced dads who want to date again: fitting dates around a custody schedule, what to say about your kids, protecting their privacy, and when to introduce a partner.

By The Arranged Team

Quick verdict: dating as a divorced dad works when you're upfront and organized. Say you have kids in your profile, date on your off nights instead of cancelling time with them, keep their names and faces off the apps, and wait until a relationship is serious and stable, usually several months in, before introducing a partner. Privacy is for your kids. It is never a reason to hide them from the woman you're seeing.

We run Arranged, a dating app. This is general guidance, not legal or family-therapy advice; your parenting plan and your kids come first.

As a divorced dad, you can date well by being honest about your kids from the first message, fitting dates into the nights you don't have them, and keeping your children out of the dating part of your life until a relationship has earned it. The hard part isn't finding women who are fine with kids. It's the calendar.

We already have a guide to dating after divorce for men over 40, which is about the emotional side: whether you're ready, what you've learned, which apps to try. This one is narrower. It's for the man who has decided he's ready and now has to work out how dating fits around school pickups, alternate weekends and a co-parent.

Should you say you have kids on your dating profile?

Yes. Plainly, and in the profile, not on the third date.

Something like "Dad to two (9 and 12), with them every other week" tells her everything she needs at this stage. It filters out women who don't want to date a father, which saves both of you time. And it signals the thing most women want to know about a divorced dad anyway: that you're involved.

What you don't need to share up front is the custody arrangement in detail, the story of the divorce, or anything about your ex. Those come later, if at all.

Keep your kids off the apps

This is the privacy rule, and it's a firm one. No photos of your children on a dating profile, even cropped, even from behind. No names, ages tied to names, school logos, team jerseys or anything that places them in a particular town. If your best photo of yourself has a kid in it, find another photo.

The reasons are simple. You don't control who sees a dating profile, it can be screenshotted, and your kids didn't agree to be part of it. Many co-parents also feel strongly about this, and you'll have an easier time if you never give yours a reason to.

Discretion, for a dad, means protecting your children's privacy and your own. It doesn't mean hiding the fact that you have kids from someone you're dating, or hiding that you're dating from people who have a real stake in it. If you find yourself keeping secrets from a partner, that's not discretion. That's a problem.

Finding time to date on a custody schedule

Most divorced dads aren't short of interest. They're short of evenings. The ones who manage it treat dating the way they treat the gym: a fixed slot, not whatever's left over.

  • Plan first dates for your off nights or off weekends, and say so ("I'm free Thursday or Saturday next week") rather than leaving it open.
  • Don't swap or cancel your time with your kids for a first or second date. You'll resent it, they'll notice, and she'll eventually wonder what that says about you.
  • Use the app in a short window, say 15 minutes after the kids are in bed, rather than all evening. Our guide to dating apps for busy professionals has a routine for this.
  • Keep first dates short. An hour for coffee fits around a school night far better than a three-course dinner.

If your schedule changes week to week, tell her that early. Most women don't mind a moving calendar. What they mind is feeling like an afterthought in it.

What to tell her early on

Being upfront isn't the same as oversharing. On a first or second date, it's enough that she knows:

  • How many kids you have and roughly how old they are
  • How much of the time they're with you
  • That your kids come first in scheduling, and what that looks like in practice
  • Whether you want more children, if that's a real question for either of you

That last one gets skipped and shouldn't. If she wants kids of her own and you're done, or the reverse, it's kinder to find out in week two than in month eight.

What doesn't belong on early dates: a blow-by-blow of the divorce, complaints about your ex, and anything that turns her into a sounding board. A sentence is fine ("we split two years ago, it's civil now"). A monologue isn't.

When should you introduce a new partner to your kids?

Later than you want to, and only once. There's no official number of months, and every family is different. A sensible bar is a relationship that is exclusive, stable and likely to last, which for many people means several months or more. If your kids see a family therapist, ask them; they know your children better than any blog does. The point isn't the calendar. It's that your kids shouldn't meet a series of partners.

When it's time, a few things help:

  • Talk to your kids first, in age-appropriate terms, before they meet her.
  • Make the first meeting short, public and low-key: a park, a lunch, an activity with something to do besides stare at each other.
  • Don't expect affection on either side. Polite is a good result.
  • Keep overnights for later, once the kids are comfortable with her being around.
  • Don't ask your kids to keep the relationship secret from their other parent. That's an unfair thing to put on a child.

Do you tell your ex you're dating?

Not when you start. You don't owe a co-parent a report on your first dates. But before a new partner meets your kids, it's usually wise to give your ex a short heads-up, so the kids don't become the messengers. Keep it factual and brief.

Check your parenting plan too. Some include terms about introductions or overnight guests, and it's better to know what yours says than to find out in a dispute. If you and your ex already communicate through a co-parenting app such as OurFamilyWizard or TalkingParents, keep this kind of logistics there, in writing, and leave the rest of your dating life out of it.

Dating across cities as a divorced dad

This sounds backwards, but it can suit dads well. If you have your kids half the time, a relationship with someone a flight away can fit neatly into the other half: visits on your off weekends, no pressure to blend households early, and no chance of bumping into her at the school gate before you're ready.

It's also common on Arranged. Across 1,804 first messages men sent there between August and October 2026, 86% crossed 250 miles or more, and distance didn't lower reply rates: 35% under 25 miles, 37% over 1,000 miles. You'll find the figures in our 2026 data report, and the logistics of first meetings in another city in our travel dating guide for men. If you're in the Midwest, the Chicago city page has first-date spots that work for a short visit.

First messages when you're short on time

Short wins. On Arranged, men's openers of 60 to 149 characters got a reply 41% of the time, against 18% for 150 characters or more, and openers with a question got replies 50% of the time against 33% without. So skip the long introduction about your life and your kids. Your profile already says it. Ask her one specific thing about hers. Our guide to a first message that gets a reply has examples, and once she answers, getting from match to first date fits neatly into a custody week.

Safety, for you and for your kids

Meet in public the first few times, get yourself there and back, and tell a friend where you'll be. Don't share your home address, your kids' school or your custody schedule with someone you haven't met. If someone pushes for money, or for details about your children, early on, stop. Our online dating safety checklist covers the rest.

Where Arranged fits

Arranged suits divorced dads who want to be clear about what they're looking for and are open to meeting someone in another city. Women join and message free. Everyone is 18 or older. Optional photo verification is a live selfie checked automatically for a face and apparent age; it isn't compared to profile photos.

Quick answer: how should a divorced dad date?

Say you have kids in your profile, keep their photos and names off dating apps, date on your off nights rather than cancelling time with them, and tell a woman early how much of the time your kids are with you. Wait until a relationship is exclusive and stable, often several months, before she meets your kids, and give your co-parent a heads-up first. Keep your children's privacy, but never hide them from a partner.

Frequently asked questions

Is it hard to date as a divorced dad?

The main difficulty is time, not interest. Many women are happy to date a father who is involved with his kids. Plan dates around your custody schedule and be upfront about it, and most of the difficulty goes away.

Should I put photos of my kids on my dating profile?

No. Keep their faces, names and anything identifying off dating apps. Use photos of just yourself and mention in your bio that you're a dad.

How soon should I introduce my girlfriend to my kids?

Once the relationship is exclusive and stable, which for many people means several months or more. Talk to your kids first, keep the first meeting short and low-key, and give your co-parent a heads-up beforehand.

Do I have to tell my ex I'm dating?

Not when you start. Before a new partner meets your children, a short, factual heads-up is usually wise, and you should check whether your parenting plan says anything about introductions or overnight guests.

How do I find time to date with my kids half the week?

Use your off nights and off weekends, keep first dates to about an hour, and check the app in one short window a day. Don't cancel time with your kids for early dates.

Is a long-distance relationship realistic for a single dad?

It can be. Visits on your off weekends keep your time with your kids intact and avoid blending households too early. On Arranged, most first messages cross 250 miles or more, and distance didn't lower reply rates.

Date on your own schedule.
