There is plenty in between, too. Santa Barbara is about two hours up the coast from LA and a stop on the Pacific Surfliner, Palm Springs is roughly two hours east in the desert, and the Central Valley cities along Highway 99, like Fresno and Bakersfield, sit between the two regions. Los Angeles
The biggest market in the state and the most spread out. Los Angeles County has about 9.8 million people (Census 2024 estimates), and a profile that says "LA" could mean Santa Monica, Pasadena or the Valley. Traffic is the defining constraint: INRIX's 2024 scorecard estimated LA drivers lost 88 hours to congestion that year. Agree on drive time rather than distance, and meet somewhere central like Mid-City, Downtown or Santa Monica.
LAX has the most flights; Hollywood Burbank is smaller and closer to the Valley and Pasadena, and Long Beach covers the South Bay. Orange County
Orange County sits between LA and San Diego, with cities like Irvine, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach. It has its own airport, John Wayne (SNA), which many travelers find quicker than LAX. Without heavy traffic, Irvine is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Downtown LA by car, and the Pacific Surfliner stops in Anaheim, Irvine and San Juan Capistrano.
For a first date, the Orange County Museum of Art at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa has offered free general admission since its new building opened in October 2022, a policy announced for its first ten years. San Diego is about two hours south of LA by car without heavy traffic, and about three hours by Pacific Surfliner from LA's Union Station. San Diego International (SAN) is unusually close to downtown, which makes weekend visits easy.

San Francisco and the Bay Area
The Bay Area is really several cities: San Francisco, Oakland and the East Bay, the Peninsula and San Jose. It has three major airports, SFO, Oakland (OAK) and San Jose (SJC), and BART trains connect SFO and Oakland's airport with San Francisco and the East Bay, so a car is optional for a lot of dates here.
Public places that work: the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero, SFMOMA downtown, the de Young museum in Golden Gate Park, and the path around Lake Merritt in Oakland. Sacramento
Sacramento is the state capital and about 90 miles northeast of San Francisco, roughly a 90-minute to two-hour drive depending on traffic. Amtrak's Capitol Corridor trains run between Sacramento and the Bay Area, and Sacramento International (SMF) has direct flights to Southern California.
Midtown has walkable streets and restaurants; Old Sacramento, on the river by the Tower Bridge, is busy and public; and the Crocker Art Museum is a good indoor option on hot afternoons, which Sacramento has plenty of in summer. Times are rough guides; traffic in LA and the Bay Area can add an hour at rush hour, so check a maps app before you commit. The Pacific Surfliner runs about 350 miles along the coast between San Diego and San Luis Obispo, and the stretch through Orange County and north of Ventura runs right beside the ocean, which makes the train a date in itself.
