The best dating app for most New York men over 40 is Hinge, because its written prompts reward the thing you have more of than a 28-year-old: something interesting to say. Which second app you add depends on what you want, and that's what the rest of this guide sorts out.

You're not unusual for being on an app at 40-something. Pew Research Center found in a survey published February 2, 2023 that 37% of US adults aged 30 to 49 had ever used a dating site or app, and 20% of those aged 50 to 64. In a city of 8.8 million people at the 2020 Census, that's a lot of company.

Hinge: the best general pick for NYC men over 40

Hinge's App Store listing calls it the app "designed to be deleted," and its profiles are built around written prompts as well as photos. That's why we rank it first. You aren't competing on lighting; you're competing on whether you can say something worth replying to in a sentence. Most men with a few decades of stories can.

Hinge is owned by Match Group and based in New York, and in our experience it's the default app for a lot of people in the city looking for a relationship. Free members can message their matches, with a daily cap on likes. Hinge+ was listed at $16.99 and $19.99 on the US App Store on October 29, 2026. If you want a clearer age gap, Hinge will let you set the range, but it won't tell you whether she's open to it.

Match: still where many men in their late 40s and 50s start

Match is one of the oldest dating platforms still running, and in our view it's where a lot of divorced men in their late 40s and 50s go first when they want someone close to their own age. You need a paid membership to read messages. The US App Store listed "1 Month Standard" at $44.99 on October 29, 2026, with longer bundles at lower monthly rates.

The paywall filters out casual browsers, which helps. The interface feels dated, which doesn't. If you want a woman in her 20s or early 30s, you'll find fewer of them here than on other apps.

Bumble: the rule that changed

For most of its life Bumble's defining rule was that in matches between men and women, the woman sent the first message. That changed in August 2026, when Bumble said all users could send the first message, citing a company survey in which 66% of women said they preferred men to message first (CNN, August 13, 2026). Premium was listed at $17.99 to $32.99 on the US App Store on October 29, 2026. In our opinion it's a reasonable second app for reach, with intentions all over the map.

Raya and The League: the filtered apps

Raya's App Store listing says "Membership is available by application only," and that applications are reviewed by a global committee, with review times ranging from days to months. Once accepted, its listing showed Membership at $24.99 and Raya+ at $49.99 on October 29, 2026. In our opinion it's worth applying if your work or friends already put you in creative, media or fashion circles, and a long wait if they don't. Don't build your dating life around getting in.

The League filters its members as part of signing up, and its US App Store listing showed a one-month Premium Membership at $99.99 on October 29, 2026. In our view it's most useful in a few big coastal cities, New York among them, and it works better as a supplement than as your main app.

Tinder: big, young and mostly casual

Tinder has the biggest name and, in our experience, skews young and casual. Messaging your matches is free; the paid tiers mostly buy more visibility. If you use it, set the age filters and expect a lower match rate than you had at 28.

Arranged: for men who want a younger adult partner and want to be clear about it

Here's the gap the mainstream apps leave. If you're 46 and interested in a woman of 28, Hinge and Match will let you set that range, but nothing tells you whether she's open to a wide gap. You find out three dates in.

Arranged is built the other way round. Both people say upfront what they're looking for, including the age gap and how they'd like a relationship to work: how often you can see each other, whether one of you travels, whether you want something exclusive. On Arranged, the median man is 39, the median woman is 26, and the median age gap across 1,864 matches is 19 years. Diamond is $99.99 a month or $999 a year and adds private browsing, hidden read receipts and last seen, priority placement and a weekly 24-hour boost. Women join and message free. Photo verification is optional: a live selfie checked automatically for a face and apparent age. It isn't compared to the profile photos, so a video call before you meet is still the best check.

The honest downsides: Arranged launched in 2026, so it's much smaller than Hinge or Bumble, and members often meet across cities rather than across town. Not every profile is verified. And "being clear" means clarity about the relationship, not a transaction. New York law prohibits prostitution (NY Penal Law §230.00), and Arranged bans exchanging money or gifts for sex.

Why NYC men should search wider than the five boroughs
