Who Is Actually On These Apps: Our Real Age Numbers
Every dating app publishes glossy demographics and none of them publish the awkward part. Here is the actual age breakdown of our members by side, including the bracket where the ratio inverts completely.
Of the women on Arranged, 226 of 303 are under 35. Of the men, more than a third are over 40. In the 45-and-over bracket there are 36 men and 6 women, so the ratio that favours men everywhere else inverts completely and becomes six to one against them.
One app, 463 profiles with a date of birth, at a moment in time. Yours will differ. But it is real data rather than a press release.
Dating apps publish demographics the way restaurants publish photographs of the food. Technically accurate, carefully lit, and not what turns up.
We would rather show the actual distribution, including the part that is unflattering to us, because anybody deciding whether to sign up is really asking one question — who is on there — and the honest answer is more useful than a good one.

Three things fall out of that immediately.
Women skew young, and heavily
Three quarters of the women here are under 35, and more than a third are under 25. That is not a surprise to anyone who has used one of these apps, but the concentration is sharper than most people assume. The 18-to-24 bracket alone has more women in it than every bracket over 35 combined.
Men are spread out, and older
The men are distributed far more evenly across the age range, with the largest single group between 35 and 44. Roughly a third are over 40.
Put those two together and you get the shape everyone expects: a lot of younger women, a lot of older men, and a middle where the two overlap.
The bracket where it inverts
This is the number worth sitting with.
Over 45, there are 36 men and 6 women. Six to one.
Across the platform as a whole the ratio runs the other way — roughly two women for every man. A man in his thirties is choosing from a large pool. The same man at 50 is competing with 35 other men for six women, unless he is looking at women considerably younger than himself, which on this kind of app many are.
Nobody says this out loud in marketing copy, and it is the single most useful fact on this page if you are a man over 45 deciding where to spend your time. It is also why the honest advice to a 50-year-old man is that his age range preference matters more than his photos.
What this means if you are a woman under 30
You are in the most crowded part of the app. That has two consequences that pull in opposite directions.
There is no shortage of attention, and a good deal of it is low effort. Our own analysis of opening messages found that two thirds of first messages are under twenty characters — a greeting and nothing else. Most of what arrives will not be worth answering.
But you are also competing with the largest cohort on the app for the attention of a much smaller group of men. Being one of 114 women aged 18 to 24 is a different position from being one of 5 women over 45, and the profile advice that works is different too. A complete profile does more here than anywhere else on the platform.
What this means for us
We are short of men, particularly active ones, and the numbers above are why we say so rather than advertising a balanced community. A dating app with more supply than demand on one side is not a healthy market, and pretending otherwise mostly wastes the time of the people already here.
It is also the reason distance matters less on Arranged than it might. With 463 profiles spread across a lot of cities, insisting on somebody within twenty miles removes most of your options. We looked at this separately and found that messages crossing a border got answered slightly more often than messages crossing a city.
The caveats, which are real
This is 463 profiles that have a date of birth recorded, on one app, at one moment. A larger platform will look different, and we will look different in six months.
Ages are self-reported, as they are everywhere. We verify photos, not birthdays.
And we are not a neutral party publishing a survey. We are a dating app publishing our own numbers, which we think is more useful than the alternative, but you should read it knowing that.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average age on a sugar dating app?
On ours the women cluster in the twenties and the men in the thirties and forties. There is no single average worth quoting because the two sides have genuinely different distributions — an average across both would describe nobody.
Are there older women on these apps?
Very few, on ours. Six over 45 out of 303. If you are an older woman the pool of men is unusually favourable; if you are an older man looking for someone your own age, it is not.
What age gap is normal here?
Given the distributions above, a gap is the common case rather than the exception. We would rather state that plainly than imply otherwise.
Do more women than men join overall?
Yes, by roughly two to one on our platform, and the gap is widest in the youngest brackets. It narrows through the thirties and reverses completely after 45.
Does this change how the app ranks people?
Distance is a tiebreaker rather than a filter, precisely because the pool in any one city is small. Nobody is hidden for living somewhere else.
Will you publish this again?
Yes, and we will say if it moves against us. The point of publishing your own numbers is lost if you only do it in the quarters they look good.
