We Read 411 Conversations. The Long-Distance Ones Got More Replies.

Every dating app treats distance as a problem to be minimised. We went through our own numbers and found the opposite: messages that crossed a border were answered more often than messages that crossed a city.

By The Arranged Team

Across 411 conversations on Arranged, 95% were between people in different cities and 45% crossed a national border. The cross-border ones were answered more often: 22% got a reply, against 17% for people in the same country.

Small numbers, one app, and we are obviously not a neutral party. Read it as a signal worth testing rather than a law of nature.

Every mainstream dating app is built on a quiet assumption: the best match is the nearest one. Proximity is the first filter, the default sort, and usually the thing you cannot switch off. Distance is treated as friction to be removed.

We went looking for evidence of that in our own data and could not find it. What we found instead was that the further apart two people were, the more likely they were to actually talk to each other.

What we actually measured

We took every direct conversation between two real members, ignored anything involving an inactive or placeholder profile, and asked one question of each: did more than one person ever send a message?

That is a deliberately low bar. It is not a date, or a relationship, or even a good conversation. It is just the difference between talking to someone and talking at them. On dating apps that bar is cleared far less often than anyone admits.

Here is what came back.

Of 411 conversations, 392 were between people in different cities. That is 95%, which surprised us less than it might surprise you, and we will come back to why. 185 of them were between people in different countries.

Same country, 226 conversations, 40 got a reply. That is 17%.

Different countries, 185 conversations, 42 got a reply. That is 22%.

So the long shots did better. Not dramatically, and not by enough that we would bet a company on it, but consistently and in the opposite direction to what the entire industry designs for.

Does long-distance dating actually work?

The honest answer is that our data cannot tell you whether long-distance relationships work. It can tell you something narrower and, if you are the one typing, more immediately useful: a message sent across a border is more likely to be read and answered than one sent across town.

Why that might be true is guesswork, but two explanations feel right.

The first is effort. Nobody messages someone four thousand miles away by accident. Local swiping is cheap and half-attentive, and the messages that come out of it tend to read that way. If you have gone to the trouble of talking to someone in another country, you have usually thought about what you are going to say.

The second is that distance filters for intent on both sides. A person who lists themselves as open to meeting someone abroad has already decided they are looking for something worth the trip. That is a meaningfully different mindset from wondering who is within five miles right now.

Why do so many conversations cross a city?

Because we do not stop them. Distance on Arranged is a tiebreaker, not a gate. If two people are an equally good match and one is nearer, the nearer one ranks higher. But nobody is hidden from you for living somewhere else, and the sort is yours to change.

That was a deliberate decision and for a while we were not sure it was the right one. Our members are spread across 278 cities. On a conventional dating app that is a disaster, because a conventional dating app needs a hundred people in your postcode to feel alive. Ours does not work that way, and the numbers above are the reason we stopped worrying about it.

About a third of our members — 32% — say outright that they are open to meeting someone in another city. At any given moment a few dozen have told the app they are travelling and want to see who is where they are going.

How to date while travelling without wasting the trip

The mistake is landing first and looking second. By the time you have found someone, agreed on a night and worked out where to go, you are on the flight home.

Set your location to where you are going roughly three to five days before you fly. That is long enough to have an actual conversation and short enough that plans do not go stale. Say when you are there in your opening message, because it removes the biggest unspoken question and gives the other person something concrete to answer.

Do not schedule the first meeting for the day you land. You will be tired, delayed, or both, and cancelling on someone you have not met yet rarely recovers.

We wrote a longer version of this in our guide to dating while travelling, which goes into the city-by-city detail.

The part where distance is genuinely a problem

Being far apart is excellent cover for not being who you say you are, and travel plans are the most commonly abused hook we see. Anything that involves you paying for a ticket, fronting a deposit, or receiving money to pass on is a scam, in every case, without exception. Someone flying you out books the flight themselves and sends you the confirmation.

We have written about how the flight money scam works in detail, including the overpayment variant, which is the one that catches careful people.

The other honest caveat is that a reply is not a relationship. A 22% reply rate means 78% of those messages went nowhere. Distance did not fix dating. It moved a number by five points.

What we are doing with this

Mostly, not fighting it. We had assumed for a long time that spreading thin across hundreds of cities was our biggest weakness and that the fix was to concentrate. The reply data suggests our members are already doing something more interesting than that, and the sensible response is to make it easier rather than to herd them somewhere.

Practically that means travel mode staying free, distance staying a preference rather than a wall, and the app being clear about who is where and when. If your dating life already has an airport in it, we are probably the right shape.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 22% reply rate good?

It is better than our same-country rate of 17% and better than we expected. Published reply rates across the industry vary enormously depending on who is counting and what they count, so we would rather compare our own numbers to each other than to somebody's marketing page.

How many conversations did you look at?

411 direct conversations between real members. That is enough to notice a pattern and not enough to be certain of one. We will publish an update when the sample is larger, including if it reverses.

Does Arranged hide people who live far away?

No. Distance affects the order results appear in, and you can change or ignore the sort entirely. Nobody is filtered out for living somewhere else.

What is travel mode?

You set the city you are heading to and your profile appears to people there before you arrive. It is free, and other members can see that you are visiting rather than local, which saves everyone the guessing.

How far in advance should I set my destination?

Three to five days. Earlier than a week and the conversation dies before you land. Later than about two days and there is not enough time to arrange anything worth flying for.

Are these numbers going to change?

Almost certainly. We are a young app, the sample is small, and we changed several things about notifications shortly after pulling these figures, which will affect reply rates on its own. We will say so when they move.
