Dating Across Texas Cities: A Long-Distance Guide

Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio sit a few hours apart. Drive times, Southwest shuttle flights, how to plan a first visit, splitting who travels, and the safety rules that matter, with Arranged's distance data.

By The Arranged Team

Quick verdict: dating someone in another Texas city is easier than it sounds. Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio are a 1.5 to 4 hour drive apart, and Southwest flies Hobby to Love Field in about an hour. Have a video call before anyone travels, keep separate rooms on a first visit, take turns traveling, and never send money for someone else's "flight."

We run Arranged. Distance and reply figures come from our own member data, published in our 2026 data report. Drive and flight times are approximate; check before you go.

Texans already think nothing of a three-hour drive for a football game or a brisket. Doing it for a person you like is not much of a stretch. The four big metros form a rough triangle, with Dallas–Fort Worth at the top, Houston at the southeast corner and Austin and San Antonio along I-35 on the west side, and most of it is connected by interstates, two airports per big city and a lot of Southwest flights.

This guide covers how far apart the cities really are, when to drive and when to fly, how to plan a first visit, how to split who travels, and the safety habits that keep long-distance dating from going wrong.

Quick answer

Austin–San Antonio is about 1.5 hours by car, Houston–Austin 2.5 to 3, Dallas–Austin about 3, Houston–Dallas 3.5 to 4. Hobby to Love Field is roughly an hour on Southwest. Video call first, book your own travel and your own room, meet somewhere public, alternate who travels, and never pay anyone's travel to them directly.

Does distance hurt your chances?

Not on Arranged. Here's how often men's first messages got a reply, by distance between the two members, from our 2026 data report:

Distance between themReply rate to his first message
Under 25 miles35%
25 to 249 miles32%
250 to 999 miles40%
1,000 miles or more37%

86% of men's first messages crossed 250 miles or more, and in a recent five-day window, 93% of first messages went to someone at least 50 miles away. Long distance is the normal case on Arranged, which is why distance only breaks ties in how we sort profiles and never filters anyone out.

Worth being honest about one thing: most trips inside the Texas triangle are under 250 miles, so a Houston-to-Dallas opener lands in the 25 to 249 mile band, which got replies 32% of the time against 35% locally. That's a small difference, not a wall. El Paso, the Panhandle and the Valley are a different story, and those distances are where flying makes sense.

How far apart are Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio?

Rough drive times without bad traffic, which in Texas is a big "without":

RouteMain roadTypical drive
Austin – San AntonioI-35About 1.5 hours
Houston – AustinUS-290 or TX-71About 2.5 to 3 hours
Dallas – AustinI-35About 3 hours
Houston – San AntonioI-10About 3 hours
Houston – DallasI-45About 3.5 to 4 hours
Dallas – San AntonioI-35About 4 to 4.5 hours

Friday afternoon out of any of these cities can add an hour. I-35 through Austin is famously slow. If you're driving to see someone for the first time, plan to arrive in daylight and not to be in a rush.

Driving or flying: the Southwest shuttle

Every big Texas metro has two airports: George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and Hobby (HOU) in Houston, DFW International and Dallas Love Field (DAL) in the metroplex, Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) and San Antonio International (SAT). Hobby and Love Field are the closer-in airports, and Southwest runs frequent flights between them. Southwest's route page lists the Hobby–Love Field flight at about 1 hour 7 minutes over 239 miles (checked October 28, 2026).

Door to door, flying Houston to Dallas isn't always faster than driving once you count security and getting to and from the airport. It is less tiring, and you arrive able to have a conversation. A good rule: drive for Austin–San Antonio and usually Houston–Austin, fly when it's Houston–Dallas on a Friday, and fly for anything involving El Paso.

Before anyone travels: the video call

A video call is the single best check in long-distance dating, for both of you. Within ten minutes you'll know whether the person matches the profile and whether you enjoy talking to each other. Have at least one before anyone books anything.

On Arranged, photo verification is optional: a live selfie checked automatically for a face and apparent age. It isn't compared to the profile photos and isn't a background check, so it's one signal, not proof. The video call is the real test. If someone keeps finding reasons not to get on camera, that tells you what you need to know.

How to plan the first visit

For a first meeting, the person visiting should feel completely free to leave. That means a few non-negotiables.

Each of you has your own room. If you're visiting, book your own hotel. If she's visiting you, she stays at a hotel, not your place, and she has the address in advance to share with a friend. Separate rooms aren't a lack of enthusiasm. They mean the time you spend together is time you both chose.

The visitor holds their own return. Her ticket is in her name and in her hands, or her car is in the hotel garage. Either of you can end the visit early without asking permission.

The first meeting is public. Lunch, a museum, a park. In Houston, the Menil Collection or Hermann Park. In Dallas, Klyde Warren Park and the Dallas Museum of Art. In Austin, Zilker Park or the Blanton Museum of Art. In San Antonio, a walk along the Museum Reach of the River Walk to the Pearl, or the San Antonio Missions, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our city pages for Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio have more.

Leave room in the schedule. A weekend packed with plans is exhausting for two people who have just met. One planned thing a day is about right.

Splitting who travels

There's no rule, and the fairest arrangement is the one you both agree to out loud. A few approaches that work:

The person with the more flexible schedule travels more. If you're a man with custody every other weekend, she may come to you on your weekends with the kids at their mother's, and you go to her on the others. Say so plainly rather than letting it fall into a pattern nobody chose.

Alternate, as a default. One trip each way keeps either person from feeling like they're doing all the work. It also means each of you sees how the other lives, which matters if this becomes serious.

For the first meeting, going to her is usually the better choice. She's on home ground, with her own place and her own friends nearby. If you invite her to visit you instead, it's normal courtesy for the person extending the invitation to offer to cover the trip, booked in her name directly with the airline. That's hospitality, with no expectations attached. A plane ticket is not a down payment on anything. Our travel dating guide for men covers the etiquette in more detail.

Meeting in the middle sounds fair, but the midpoint between Houston and Dallas is a stretch of I-45 with gas stations. Better to pick a real place one of you would enjoy, and swap next time.

Safety rules for dating across Texas

Never send money for a flight. The most common long-distance dating scam goes like this: someone you haven't met agrees to visit, then needs money for the ticket, a "deposit," a car repair, or a bus fare, and asks you to send it by app, gift card or crypto. Then there's another emergency. If you want to help someone travel, book the ticket yourself in their name, with the airline. If they won't accept that, there was never a trip. The FTC reported that people lost $1.3 billion to romance scams in 2022 (FTC Data Spotlight, February 2023). Our post on the flight money scam walks through the warning signs.

Drive yourself, or have your own way there and back. Don't ride with someone you've just met for a three-hour drive.

Respect the weather. Texas summers are long and hot, so carry water and don't plan a midday hike in August. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, per NOAA, and the Gulf Coast can see storms anywhere in that window. Before a Houston visit in those months, check the forecast, and be ready to postpone.

Tell a friend where you're going, with the hotel name and the profile of the person you're meeting. Keep your phone charged. Our online dating safety checklist covers the rest.

Texas law prohibits prostitution (Texas Penal Code §43.02), and Arranged bans exchanging money or gifts for sex. A visit is a date, not an exchange. Everyone on Arranged is 18 or older.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Houston to Dallas?

About 3.5 to 4 hours on I-45 without heavy traffic. Southwest flies from Houston Hobby to Dallas Love Field in about an hour, according to its route page.

Is long-distance dating within Texas realistic?

Yes. The four big metros are 1.5 to 4 hours apart by car. On Arranged, 86% of men's first messages crossed 250 miles or more, and long-distance openers got replies about as often as local ones.

Who should travel for the first date?

Usually the man goes to her for the first meeting, because she's more comfortable on home ground. After that, agree on a pattern out loud: alternate, or let whoever has the more flexible schedule travel more.

Should we stay in the same hotel room on a first visit?

No. Each person should have their own room and their own way home, so either of you can end the visit early without awkwardness.

Someone asked me to send money for their flight. What should I do?

Don't send it. If you want to help, book the ticket yourself in their name directly with the airline. Requests for money for travel from someone you haven't met are a common scam pattern.

When is hurricane season in Texas?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, per NOAA. Check the forecast before planning a Gulf Coast visit in those months.

She might be three hours up I-45. That's fine.
