How to Date Younger Women Respectfully: A Guide for Men Over 40

Age gaps are common and the data says they don't stop women replying. What does: how you write, how you listen, and whether you treat her as an equal. A guide for men 40+ dating women 18 and over, with Arranged's reply-rate data by age gap.

By The Arranged Team

Quick verdict: across 1,864 matches on Arranged, the median age gap was 19 years, and men's first messages to women 25 or more years younger got replies 40% of the time, about the same as messages across a gap of under five years (41%). The gap isn't what decides things. Treating her as an equal, writing about her rather than yourself, and being honest about what you want are.

This guide is about dating adult women, 18 and over. Everyone on Arranged is 18 or older. The figures are from Arranged's own member data, which we publish, and we run the app.

Men over 40 who are interested in younger women tend to fall into one of two traps. Some apologize for it, hedging every message as if they expect to be told off. Others lean into it, making the gap the main subject, as though being older were the thing on offer. Neither works well, and both miss the point.

The point is that a woman who's open to dating an older man is still deciding whether she wants to date you. She'll decide that the same way anyone does: by whether you're interesting, kind, reliable, and fun to talk to. This guide covers how to show her that, what the data says about age gaps, and the handful of things that put women off fast.

What the data says about age gaps and replies

On Arranged, the median man is 39 and the median woman is 26. Across 1,864 matches, the median age gap was 19 years. A wide gap is the normal case on the site, not the exception.

Here's how often men's first messages got a reply, by the gap between his age and hers. Men's openers got replies 37% of the time overall.

Age gapReply rate to his first message
Under 5 years41%
5 to 9 years40%
10 to 14 years37%
15 to 19 years36%
20 to 24 years26%
25 years or more40%

Two things are in there. There's a gentle slide from 41% to 36% as the gap grows to 15 to 19 years, then a clear dip to 26% at 20 to 24 years. And then the largest group, 25 years or more, comes straight back to 40%.

We don't know why the 20 to 24 band dips, and we wouldn't read it as a rule. It's a smaller group, and a few heavy senders could move it a lot. The more useful takeaway is the overall shape: a wide age gap on its own didn't stop women replying. The full method and sample sizes are in our 2026 data report.

Be clear about what you want

The most respectful thing you can do is be upfront. Say on your profile what kind of relationship you're looking for, and say it again early in a conversation if it comes up. Women who want the same thing will find you more easily, and women who don't can move on without either of you wasting time.

Being clear also means being honest about the basics. Your real age. Whether you have children. Whether you're divorced, separated, or have never married. Shaving five years off your age because you're worried about the gap is the fastest way to start a relationship on the wrong foot. If the gap is a problem for her, it's better to know now.

And be clear about what you're not offering. If you're not looking for something long term, say so. If you are, say that.

Write to her as an equal

This is where most men go wrong, usually without meaning to. The tone slips into mentor, or into tour guide. "You'll understand when you're older." "Let me tell you about..." "I'd love to show you the world." Each one positions her as someone who needs teaching or rescuing, and most women find that tiresome at best.

Talk to her the way you'd talk to a woman your own age you found interesting. Ask about her work, her plans, the things on her profile. Disagree with her when you disagree. Let her be the expert on the things she knows better than you. A 26-year-old who works in product design probably knows more about the apps on your phone than you do, and that's a perfectly good conversation.

Your experience is worth something. But it comes across best when it shows up as how you behave, not as something you tell her about.

First messages: short, about her, with a question

The same rules that work at every age gap work here. In our first-message study, openers of 60 to 149 characters got replies 41% of the time, against 18% for openers of 150 characters or more. Messages with a question did better: 50% against 33%.

So pick one thing from her profile and ask about it. Don't open with her looks, and don't open with your age. "Your photo at the climbing wall looks serious. Is that a regular thing or a one-time dare?" is a better start than anything that comments on her appearance or explains your situation.

Leave the gap out of the first message entirely. She can see your age on your profile. If she wants to talk about it, she will.

How to handle the age gap when it comes up

At some point, she'll probably ask, or a friend of hers will, or you'll both notice a reference one of you doesn't get. When it comes up, be relaxed and honest. "Yes, I'm older than most people you've dated, probably. Does it bother you?" is a better answer than either a defensive speech or a joke that dodges it.

Take her answer at face value. If she says it doesn't bother her, believe her and move on. If she has questions, answer them. And if over time you realize you want different things at different life stages, that's a normal reason for any relationship not to work. It isn't a failure.

There's more on the research side in our post on age gap relationships.

Things that put women off quickly

Commenting on her body in early messages. It happens at every age, and it lands worse coming from a man who's clearly older.

Making the gap the theme. Constant references to her age, to your age, to how young she is. Once is fine. Every message is a lot.

Talking about what you can buy. Leading with your car, your watch or what you earn reads as if you think that's what she's there for. Let her get to know you first.

Pushing for a fast first meeting, or for personal details she hasn't offered. Let her set the pace on her phone number, her surname, where she lives and works.

Not listening. If she told you about her sister's wedding last week and you don't ask how it went, she'll notice.

Meeting for the first time

Pick somewhere public and easy to leave, like a café, a hotel lobby bar or a busy restaurant. Let her get herself there and home. If she's coming from another city, our travel dating guide for men covers how to plan that respectfully, including why she should have her own room and her own return plan.

Then be the man from your messages. Turn up on time. Put your phone away. Ask questions and listen to the answers. Most first dates go well or badly in the first twenty minutes based on whether both people feel listened to.

Is it okay to date a much younger woman?

Between two adults who are honest with each other about what they want, yes. Plenty of age-gap relationships are happy and long-lasting, and plenty aren't, which is true of relationships in general. The things that make them work are the same things that make any relationship work: mutual respect, honesty, and both people getting what they came for.

What makes them go wrong, more often than not, is one person treating the other as less than an equal. Avoid that, and the gap matters far less than you'd expect.

Frequently asked questions

Do younger women reply to older men?

On Arranged, yes, at similar rates to men their own age. Men's first messages to women 25 or more years younger got replies 40% of the time, against 41% for a gap under five years. There was a dip to 26% at 20 to 24 years that we can't explain and wouldn't treat as a rule.

What is the average age gap on Arranged?

The median age gap across 1,864 matches was 19 years. The median man is 39 and the median woman is 26. Everyone on Arranged is 18 or older.

Should I mention the age gap in my first message?

No. She can see your age on your profile. Write about something on her profile and ask her a question. If she wants to talk about the gap, let her bring it up.

How do I date a younger woman without seeming creepy?

Treat her as an equal. Don't comment on her body early on, don't make her age the topic, don't lead with money or possessions, and let her set the pace on personal details and meeting. Be honest about your age and what you want.

Is a 20-year age gap too much?

That's for the two of you to decide. Between consenting adults who are honest about what they want, it can work well. On Arranged, a gap of around 19 years is the median, so it's common there.

Write to her, not about yourself.
